Potluck: Some reasons for eating ssam (lettuce) on May 25th

by Lisa Chan

POTLUCK is a series of communal meals between friends and like-minded enthusiasts looking for some reasons to gather. On May 25th, our reason was to eat ssam (meaning something wrapped in lettuce in Korean). As hosts, flōoat and nandal seo, we provided a tablescape of lettuce - each selected for their subtle differences in flavours and texture, rice, ssamjang as well as Táng (our very own cold brewed ginger tea with jujube) and pandan blondies for dessert.

Each guest was invited to bring a dish of their own that in their opinion is the perfect match for pairing with ssam. It was a beautiful night of storytelling through food as we collectively filled our 2.4 metres table with 15 different reasons for eating ssam, ranging from Dubu Durichigi (Stir-fried kimchi and tofu) to century eggs, Myeolchi Bokkeun (Stir-fried Anchovies), crispy pork belly, marinated duck, dry laksa, and many more. Our tea room was filled with chit-chat, ranging from sharing our names to sharing memorial rituals of each of our own cultures.

As our guests opened their hearts and hands and delicately wrapped each bite, new friends were made, old friends met again, and bellies were filled. We look forward to our next gathering, and thank you for joining us.
