About the workshop

Join us for a relaxing and meditative session in Chinese calligraphy taught by May Chan (of InkJoyGraphy). We will each choose a character (or characters) to work with, which we'll later incorporate into an unique table lamp containing our personalised art.

The workshop will have three parts:

[20 mins] Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy
Guests will be introduced to the art of Chinese calligraphy, exploring various calligraphy styles, brush-holding techniques, and more. Paired with our first tea, curated by flōoat, and dim sum.

[30 mins] Strokes Practice
We’ll move on to practicing fundamental strokes to help everyone build familiarity. Guests will choose their character(s) to focus on for the session.

[40 mins] Guided Practice and Table Lamp Creation
With May’s guidance, guests will practice their chosen character(s) to refine their strokes. When guests feel ready, we will write our character/s onto special art paper, which will then be used to create our custom table lamp. Paired with our first tea, curated by flōoat. Finally, guests will take home their personalised calligraphy table lamp!

This workshop is designed for all levels. No prior experience or knowledge is necessary. All materials will be provided, there is no need to bring anything to the workshop. The ticket price includes the table lamp. 12 guests per session. Saturday November 16th. Guilford Street, London WC1N 1DP.

About the instructor

May Chan is a Chinese calligrapher based in the UK with over 20 years of experience in Chinese calligraphy. Her work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, earning her multiple awards in Hong Kong. In 2012, she completed a diploma in Chinese calligraphy from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Over the past few years, her practice 'InkJoyGraphy' has hosted calligraphy lessons and workshops in the UK, teaching over a thousand students. In addition to teaching, May has collaborated with prestigious brands and companies such as the British Museum, Jo Malone, David Morris, Bucherer, Chloe, HSBC, PayPal, Givenchy, and Greenwich Peninsula etc.
